amusiclibrary:

Igor Stravinsky’s own hand-written manuscripts for The Rite of Spring.

When Stravinsky's (17 June 1882 – 6 April 1971) ballet Le Sacre du Printemps (“The Rite of Spring”; 1913) was first performed, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on 29 May 1913, the avant-garde nature of the music and choreography caused a sensation and a near-riot in the audience. Although designed as a work for the stage, with specific passages accompanying characters and action, the music achieved equal if not greater recognition as a concert piece, and is widely considered as one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century.

Just like Stravinsky’s previous pieces, L’oiseau de feu (“The Firebird Suite”; 1910) and Petruschka (1911), Le Sacre… was written for Sergei Dialghilev’s Ballets Russes company. What made it stand out from former, however, was its experiments in areas such as tonality, metre, and rhythm, which was done in a way that was new at the time.

The original choreography was by Vaslav Nijinsky, with stage desings and costumes by Nicholas Roerich. And it had its premier on this day, 100 years ago.
